MyAthleticSupporter.com - Sports Fundraising Ideas and Sports Team Magnets
A 5k run is one of the most popular fundraisers out there. How often do you drive along the road and see signs for 5k run/walk events? I know I see them alot. A 5k run is a great fundraiser for a wide variety of organizations, not just those involved in health and wellness.
A 5k can raise a great deal of funds for your organization, create community awareness for your cause and help bring new volunteers and sponsors well beyond the event.
How athletic charity events raise money:
- Registration fees – Usually, a small fee is charged to register to run or walk the course.
- Pledges – Some events encourage participants to ask people to pledge funds based on the distance or time that participants will run or walk.
- Donations – Similar to pledges, having goal-based donations encourages runners or walkers to donate or raise a modest amount (usually between $50-200) in addition to the registration fee.
- High minimums – In some events, participants are required to raise a minimum amount of money, and that minimum is high (usually $1000-$5000). The event might attract fewer participants, but raises a significant amount of funds. For this to work participants must receive benefits such as physical training, awards and/or travel.
- Corporate sponsorships – Some events solicit donations or significant in-kind contributions from local or national corporations and businesses in exchange for giving them publicity and / or community recognition at the event.
- Teams –When families, civic organizations, and businesses form teams, they tend to motivate each other to sign up for the event. For those who do pledges or fundraising teams tend to raise more money because members offer mutual support and some friendly competition.
Getting Started - The basics:
Expect to invest more time in planning a 5K run / walk than a one-mile fun run. You will need to find a venue of appropriate distance and in general will need more support from like-minded organizations or sponsors as well as more volunteers to ensure that the event goes smoothly.
When choosing a distance for your event, there are several factors to consider for each kind of event. Think about how the features of each distance category apply to your organization, your potential participants, and your community.
Is a charity athletic event right for your organization?
There are several factors to keep in mind when deciding if an athletic event will work for your organization. Here are several things to consider:
Will this event help us reach our fundraising goals?
You might have a really cool idea to raise money for an innovative athletic event, but is that what the agency really needs right now?
- What are your immediate and long-term funding needs?
- What is a realistic fundraising goal for this event?
- Will the proceeds from this event play a significant role in meeting your funding needs?
Do we have the people resources needed?
- How many employees and volunteers are available for your event?
- What are their specific skills and how can they be matched to the tasks involved in planning this event?
- Do we currently have strong partnerships in the community that can offer discounted or in-kind products and services?
What's our history of success with special events?
- Does the organization have a track record of successful special events?
- Will this event be in addition to or replace a current annual event?
- If we replace a long-standing event, will we get a positive response from our supporters?
- Talk to employees and volunteers who worked on past events. Ask them what worked, what didn’t, and why.

Add a commentLet’s face it – finding the right fundraising idea for your sports team or community organization can be hard. You need to find a way to convince people to part with their hard-earned cash, and pushing questionable baked goods, wrapping paper and candy is SO 20th century. There must be unique fundraising ideas that will grab people’s attention and get them to hand over the green, right?

These days junk drawers are electronic graveyards full of old cell phones and outdated $200 mp3 players that wouldn’t go for 99 cents now on eBay. So what do you do with all that stuff?
